Septic Tanks FAQs
Septic Tank Frequently Asked Questions
At SST Services we pride ourselves at delivering the highest quality service for emptying and maintaining septic tanks in the Franklin, South Auckland and Coromandel area. We are experts in the field and have included a list of our most frequently asked questions below.
Can I use a garbage disposal unit with my septic tank?
Using a garbage disposal can affect how often you will need to have your septic tank pumped out. Bacteria don’t usually digest the food particles in garbage, and as a result they can accumulate as scum. If a large amount of water enters the septic tank, the food particles can be pushed into the drain field, causing clogging. If you do decide to use a garbage disposal then your tank will require emptying more often.
How often should septic tanks be emptied?
It can depend on the number of people in the household, but as a general rule we recommend every three years. At SST Services we notify each of our clients when their septic tank is due for emptying, so you can rest easy knowing you won’t run into any problems and your tank will be emptied on a regular basis, thus avoiding any damage to your tank or your drainage lines.
Will it save me money if I get it emptied less frequently?
If you have your septic tank emptied less frequently it can make it much harder to keep the tank in good condition. It means emptying it becomes a difficult job, takes much longer, and therefore costs more. There is no real savings to be gained from leaving your tank for longer before having it pumped.
How close can you get to my septic tank?
We have a 50 metre hose on our specialist truck, so we’re able to pump out difficult-to-access septic tanks. We pride ourselves in taking care of your property and providing an efficient service.
What shouldn’t be flushed down the toilet?
Flush only human waste and toilet paper down the toilet. Avoid flushing any other materials, including things that claim to be flushable. All other items can clog up your septic tank system and cause expensive failures.
Will cleaning products affect my septic tank?
Yes. Septic tanks rely on bacteria to break down waste products. Cleaning products can kill the bacteria, causing a build up of sludge in your tank.

You need to avoid solids, oil and grease entering the sewerage system. It is also good practice in accordance with health and Safety guidelines. Regular maintenance avoids build-up, which could result in emergency drain cleaning bills.

Grease traps need emptying when backups, odours and drainage problems occur. But we can put you on a regular programme so your grease trap is maintained before these problems occur.
